Glamouring for Whirled Peas
Thurs Sept 11, 2003
Event to attempt to lighten the hearts of NYC. (and elsewhere?)
GlamouringForWhirledPeas02 - my "journal" from last year's glamouring!
On Sept 11 2002, about 8 people met and left messages of hope in chalk in NYC, stopped and sang songs of peace and harmony upon request at outdoor cafes and to corner police officiers, left tiny trinkets as "fairy gifts" hanging from trees and other items, and left messages of peace & hope on index cards at various locations in the city. It was a great success, and I want to do it again this year. -- The Crisses
Location
Just about anywhere! (please list specific city starting places below!)
- NYC
- Madison Park - Broadway To Madison Ave, E 23 To E 26 Sts -- Meet at the fountain at the North end of the park throughout the day. Will split off into small groups of about 10 people to fan outwards to various endpoints in the city, to do various things. Contact glamour @ kinhost.org (no spaces). If there's enough interest, other groups can meet at other city parks, too. I will try to wear my fairy wings (last time it was *very* windy, but I did it anyway).
The Idea
- People should meet in a publically accessible area, break into smaller groups of people and go off into the city to spread messages of love ("Honor thy Children", "Cherish!"), hope ("Love Prevails!"), peace ("Hug thy Neighbor!"), personal responsibility ("Strive Dangerously!", "Think!") and fun (messages like "Don't Walk....Tango!" on a street corner).
- While waiting for groups to form or for a friend to join you, participants can donate supplies and ideas to people to "make glamours"...people who can't join touring groups are welcome to participate in the art portion of the project. Ideas for other ways that non-mobile persons can participate are welcome! Also, if you don't have a few hours to walk around, maybe you can stop by for a few minutes on your lunch hour and donate time to make things for other people to hand out!
- Bring inexpensive beads, string and charms to make permanent gifts for people met along the way or to leave hanging just within sight as a gift for people who really look around and at their world. (I usually tag mine with a label that says "Take me!" so it's not left alone because of thinking someone lost it!)
- Bring markers and post-its or index cards to make hand-out messages and "Free Hug" cards and similar.
- Bring washable sidewalk chalk, and cake glitter (environmentally friendly biodegradable edible glitter) and anything else that will make a low impact, high message statement while sticking to the legal codes of peaceful assembly and *not* vandalism.
- Dress for the weather, wear a costume if you like, bring snacks or drinks if you need them, and bring good walking shoes.
- Anyone who chooses to coordinate something in their area: Please be sure to keep within the limits of your local laws for assembly and for how you can leave messages in your area. There's a NYC cop in on my end of things :)
