Thoughts about ethics and ethical dilemnas plausible in this mentoring idea:

  • This is not about group activities and joining mentor's covens and "inner circles" of friends and the like...although I can see ways this would be great, because there's a difference between cliques and covens (and pseudo cults) in the community, and cliques could really use the new blood, but I'm really afraid of the ethics of encouraging mentorship only to have the so-called "mentors" run off with the newbies into their cul--uh coven. One reason I hesitate to match people by location. -- Xes
  • As in any such relationship where one person has a "superior" position over the other, there really ought not be any sexual behaviors during the mentorship, and definitely none within reason afterwards. Everyone deserves a fair shot at a relationship based on equality (or at least totally lucid and consensual non-equality)...any pressuring from a mentor for sexual anything is out of the question, and the student-type ought not attempt to elicit sexuality out of the mentor for their own agenda of appeasing or gaining favor. I would personally encourage same-gender-mentoring, but that won't stop this problem due to a high rate of bi/homo sexuality in the community. I think that one of the best ways around this is the keeping mentorships out of local locations idea, but I don't like that artificial barrier any more than any others. -- XES
