Triggers are events that set off an emotional or flashback reaction (abreactions) in someone who has PTSD, DID, or other similar conditions. Triggers are entirely subjective, and usually dependent on what the trauma in question is/was, although they can become "generalized" -- i.e. a car backfiring sounds enough like gunfire or a mine or grenade exploding to set off a PTSD war veteran -- it doesn't have to be exactly the same.

In multiples, decyphering triggers so that they can be diffused can be tricky business because of such generalizations.
